Photo: nordurland.is<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Siglufj\u00f6r\u00f0ur used to be the commercial capital of Iceland early in the 20th century in the Herring Era, when herring was the Iceland\u00b4s main export. Around 1968 the herring vanished and so did most of the inhabitants of Siglufj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, who moved to other parts of the island. But although the current inhabitants are only 1217, there are hundredfold more Siglufj\u00f6r\u00f0urians living all around Iceland &#8211; people who have their roots in Siglufj\u00f6r\u00f0ur and enjoy visiting the town whenever they can.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Siglufj\u00f6r\u00f0ur used to be isolated, surrounded by a ring of beautiful mountains and accessible only by sea or air or over a narrow mountain pass (in Icelandic: Siglufjar\u00f0arskar\u00f0) which was open only during the summer. \u00a0Now the town is easily accessible by road through 2 tunnels \u00a0the\u00a0H\u00e9\u00f0insfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur Tunnel (opened 2010) which is 11 km (6.8 miles) in length and connects Siglufj\u00f6r\u00f0ur to \u00a0\u00d3lafsfj\u00f6r\u00f0ur, but two towns\u00a0merged to form a municipality called\u00a0<a title=\"Fjallabygg\u00f0\" href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fjallabygg%C3%B0\">Fjallabygg\u00f0<\/a>, which literally means\u00a0<i>Mountain Settlement<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Siglufj\u00f6r\u00f0ur was already connected by the 800 meter Str\u00e1kar Tunnel to the west; the tunnel being completed 1967.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Now there are \u00a0plans of building a new golfcourse, hotel and renew the skiing facilities to draw more tourists to this goregeous part of Iceland which has been called \u201ethe Alps of the North.&#8221; \u00a0 There is a golfclub in Siglufj\u00f6r\u00f0ur called Golfkl\u00fabbur Siglufjar\u00f0ar (abbreviated GKS) which was founded in 1970.
