Elsa Valgeirsd\u00f3ttir is the manager of the Westman Islands Golf Club, where one of Iceland\u00b4s most beloved golfcourses is situated. Yesterday the Icelandair Volcano Open, which is one of the main events of the Club \u00a0came to an end and the only consolation today is that we\u00b4re one day nearer to the next Volcano Open then yesterday, but this annual tournament will be held again in approximately 1 yrs. time – July 2013. \u00a0Golf 1 took a short interview with Elsa:<\/p>\n

Where and when wee you born?<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0In Keflav\u00edk, September 27th 1955.<\/p>\n

Where were you raised?<\/em>\u00a0 In Hafnir in the South.<\/p>\n

Does anyone in your family play golf and if so who?<\/em> I\u00b4m married and my husband and I both play golf and we have 2 children.<\/p>\n

When did you start playing golf?<\/em>\u00a0 In\u00a01985.<\/p>\n

Why did you start playing golf?<\/em>\u00a0My husband and son both played golf.<\/p>\n

What\u00b4s your occupation?<\/em>\u00a0 I\u00b4m the manager of the Westman Islands Golf Club.<\/p>\n

Which one do you like more parkland courses og links style courses?\u00a0<\/em> I like linkses more because they\u00b4re beautiful.<\/p>\n

What do you prefer match play or stroke play?<\/em>\u00a0 Matchplay is more fun.<\/p>\n

What is your favorite golfcourse in Iceland?\u00a0<\/em>The golfcourse of the Westman Islands Golf Club. The surroundings are unique and the nature is so unspoiled and natural. We had a couple of journalists from Golfing World, who were very impressed with the golfcourse, especially they liked the layout of the course and the helpfullness of Icelanders. \u00a0Here is a short video Golfing World made as a result of visiting Elsa and her wonderful Club, THE WESTMAN ISLANDS GOLF CLUB BY GOLFING WORLD<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

What is your favorite golfcourse in the world apart from Iceland?\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>Pebble Beach. That course is great.<\/p>\n

What is the most special course you have played on and why?\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0No one in particular.\u00a0 All golfcourses are special. They are usually the best cared for \u00a0and maintained parts in each town. They also are in most cases\u00a0good precedents in creating a heathy passtime for children and adolecents.<\/p>\n

What is your handicap? \u00a0<\/em>19,2.<\/p>\n

What is your lowest score and on which golfcourse did you get it?<\/em>\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0I think 84 on a golftrip to Orlando, Florida.<\/p>\n

What is your longest drive?\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0I\u00b4ve got no idea.<\/p>\n

What is your greatest achievement in golf to date?<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0To own as set of golfclubs – it\u00b4s constantly on loan though, everyone is borrowing it. \u00a0No that\u00b4s not it. I really don\u00b4t know what to say, but my son always tells me that he finds it strange that someone who doesn\u00b4t play well, such as I, nevertheless always comes home with the prizes!<\/p>\n

Have you ever had a hole in one?<\/em>\u00a0 No.<\/p>\n

What snack is always in your bag?<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0I always have alot of water with me on the course.<\/p>\n

Have you participated in other sports?\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0No.<\/p>\n

There is a little statute on the Westman Islands Golf Course by the so called Mormonpond – a pond where the first Icelanders were baptized to the Mormon faith. The date was May 5th 1851 and the Icelanders were a married couple Ragnhildur Stef\u00e1nsd\u00f3ttir and Benedikt Hannesson. The little statute was a gift given on June 30th 2000 from American Mormons in remembrance of Icelanders who moved from Iceland to Utah and became Mormons in 1854-1914, according to Elsa, who is absolutely the best guide when it comes to the Westman Islands golfcourse.<\/p><\/div>\n

What is your favorite food, favorite drink, favorite music, favorite movie and favorite music?<\/em>\u00a0 My favorite food is fish\u00a0<\/strong>; my favorite drink is red wine<\/strong>\u00a0my favorite music is anything with Queen<\/strong> and similar for example the Rolling Stones<\/strong>; \u00a0my favorite movie is Forest Gump<\/strong> \u00a0and finally my favorite book are all of \u00d3lafs J\u00f3hann\u00b4s books<\/strong> (Icelandic author).<\/p>\n

Who are your favorite golfers name one male and one female golfer<\/em>? Male: Tiger. Female:\u00a0Jakob\u00edna Gu\u00f0laugsd\u00f3ttir (By far the best female golfer ever to come from the Westman Islands – she was Icelandic Champion in stroke play 1970, 1972, 1973 and 1974.)<\/p>\n

What is your dream foursome?\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0Me…. and three who play worse than I do! No, just kidding!!!<\/p>\n

What\u00b4s in the bag and what is your favorite club?\u00a0<\/em>\u00a0I have 14 clubs in my bag and the ones I use the most are my 6-iron and 5-iron.<\/p>\n

Have you been to a golfinstructor?<\/em>\u00a0 Yest, I\u00b4ve had lessons with \u00deorsteinn Hallgr\u00edmsson.<\/p>\n

Are you superstitious?<\/em>\u00a0 Both yes and no.<\/p>\n

What is your maingoal in golf and in life?<\/em>\u00a0To beat my son in golf – to better myself and others.<\/p>\n

What do you like the best about golf?<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0Come to think of it, it\u00b4s really everything. It\u00b4s being able to excercise and everyone can compete at their own level achieving their own goals. \u00a0The best thing is that it\u00b4s a sport for individuals, who can do things at their own prerequisites.<\/p>\n

How high in percentages is the mental side of your golf when you compete?<\/em>\u00a0 \u00a0I always try to do better than the last stroke I hit. I don\u00b4t know the exact percentage but it\u00b4s high.<\/p>\n
