Among the best things that happened in the week May 14th – May 20th 2012 was that Kristj\u00e1n \u00de\u00f3r Einarsson<\/strong>, GK, who plays golf with \u201cThe Colonels\u201d at Nicholls State in Louisiana in the US was named Third team All-SLC at Nicholls State. Kristj\u00e1n \u00de\u00f3r won once this season at the Harold Funston Invitational and is the one Icelander who has won most often in US College Golf or 3 times in all.\u00a0 You can read more about Kristj\u00e1n \u00de\u00f3rs achievement HERE:\u00a0<\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n

On May 17th Birgir Bj\u00f6rn Magn\u00fasson<\/strong>, GK, one of Iceland\u00b4s most promising juniors in golf got a hole in one at Gar\u00f0av\u00f6llur in Akranes, while he was practicing for the 1st competition (of 6) in the Junior Championship presented by Arion bank, held May 19th-20th.\u00a0 (Read more about the Icelandic Junior Championships in another article here on Golf 1).<\/p>\n

On May 17th one of the larger open tournaments here in Iceland at the beginning of the golf season took place i.e. the TaylorMade\/Adidas Open at Korpa golfcourse at Golf Club Reykjav\u00edk. This year Sigurj\u00f3n Arnarson<\/strong> won the stroke play part of the tournament and Sam\u00fael Karl Arnarson<\/strong> the Stableford points part.<\/p>\n

More on a tragic note: On May 17th \u00d3lafur E. \u00d3lafsson,<\/strong> manager of Golf Club K\u00f3pavogur and Gar\u00f0ab\u00e6r (GKG) died, whilst playing golf only 53 years old.<\/p>\n

On May 16th-18th Tinna J\u00f3hannsd\u00f3ttir<\/strong> took part in the Ljungbyhed Park PGA Ladies Open in Sweden, but the tournament is part of the LET Access Series. Unfortunately Tinna didn\u00b4t make the cut.<\/p>\n

On May 17th-19th \u00d3lafur Bj\u00f6rn Loftsson<\/strong> played his last match for the Charlotte 49\u00b4s in the NCAA Greensboro Regionals.\u00a0 The tournament took place at the Grandover Resort & Conference Center.\u00a0 \u00d3lafur Bj\u00f6rn got a score of 13 over par, 229 strokes (75 80 74). This summer \u00d3lafur has participated in the St. Andrews Trophy Links and the British Open Amateur but didn\u00b4t make the cut in either tournament. He plans on becoming a pro this fall.<\/p>\n

On May 20th the 5th of 10 Senior Golf Tournaments deciding the makeup of the Icelandic Senior golfteams for the EM took place in Keflav\u00edk at the Golf Club Su\u00f0urnesja (GS).\u00a0 The winners in that tournament were Au\u00f0ur D\u00faad\u00f3ttir<\/strong>, Steinunn S\u00e6mundsd\u00f3ttir, \u00deorsteinn Geirhar\u00f0sson, \u00de\u00f3rir V \u00de\u00f3risson<\/strong> and Sigur\u00f0ur Albertsson<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Finally worth mentioning in this reflection of this week late in May is that one golfcourse after the other opened their doors again here in Iceland after a much too long winter. For example on May 20th Golf Club Bakkakot in Mosfellsdalur, in the vicinity of Reykjav\u00edk, opened after the winterseason with a Texas Scramble tournament.\u00a0 It\u00b4s a very pleasant 9-hole course, close to former home of Icelands Nobel Prize winner in literature, Halld\u00f3r Laxnes, but his home is now a museum. If you come and play golf in Iceland you can combine golf and culture by playing a round at Bakkakot and visit the Halldor Laxnes museum in Mosfellsdalur afterwards and even go pony riding on the Laxnes horse farm nearby.<\/p>\n
