The Golf Club in V\u00edk, which actually is the Golf Club closest to the famous Eyjafjallaj\u00f6kull (which erupted and spewed tons of ash in the air and stopped air traffic all over Europe) has plans for enlarging its 1st par-5 hole to a par-6 hole, which would be the first par-6 hole on a golfcourse in Iceland.<\/p>\n

The golfcourse is in the little town of V\u00edk \u00ed M\u00fdrdal (inhabitants 267 according to the Icelandic Bureau of Statistics as of February 14th 2012), a town one a.o. has to drive through on ones way to East Iceland, for example Kirkjub\u00e6jarklaustur or the glacier lagoon, J\u00f6kuls\u00e1rl\u00f3n.<\/p>\n

The golfcourse in V\u00edk, V\u00edkurv\u00f6llur is a 9 hole course, but the 1st fairway is one of the longest in all of Iceland or 565 meters\/618 yards and can be seen well on the way eastbound to the left.<\/p>\n

The Golf Club V\u00edk has plans of enlarging the 1st fairway another 35 meters i.e. 38 yds and apply for it to be registered as the first par-6 hole in Iceland.<\/p>\n

Eggert Sk\u00falason, head of marketing at the Golf Club V\u00edk says that in order to be registered as a par-6 hole a fairway has to be at least 600 meters \/ 656 yards. There hasn\u00b4t been a par-6 hole so far in Iceland, but there are a few in Norway. \u00a0Such giant holes\/fairways are the most common in Japan and in the US, where there are examples of that pars on such holes are 8 strokes.<\/p>\n
