There are 3 young Icelandic golfers playing on the Golf Team of Nicholls State University in Thibodaux,Louisiana. They are: Andri \u00de\u00f3r Bj\u00f6rnsson, GR; Kristj\u00e1n \u00de\u00f3r Einarsson, GK and P\u00e9tur Freyr P\u00e9tursson, GR. This is the highest number of Icelandic golfers competing for one College Golf Team in the States or for that matter any Golf Team in the US. Golf 1 interviewed Andri \u00de\u00f3r Bj\u00f6rnsson, earlier this year, actually the day before he left for the US, to study and play golf for Nicholls State.<\/p>\n

What is your name?: <\/em>Andri \u00de\u00f3r Bj\u00f6rnsson.<\/p>\n

Member of which Golf Club in Iceland are you?:<\/em> The Golf Club of Reykjav\u00edk, GR.<\/p>\n

Where and when were you born?\u00a0<\/em> Reykjav\u00edk, November 10th 1991.<\/p>\n

Where did you grow up?<\/em>\u00a0 In the city. I grew up in Grafarvogur, Reykjav\u00edk.<\/p>\n

What is your family status?\u00a0<\/em> I still live with my parents and have 2 sisters.<\/p>\n

When did you start playing golf?<\/em> I was 6-7 years old and I started by using dad\u00b4s pitching wedge.<\/p>\n

Why did you start playing golf?<\/em>\u00a0 I have no idea – I tried going to a golfclinic as a young child to Nolan (an English golfinstructor at the time at GR, in Iceland) … and ended up going 6 times because it was so much fun.<\/p>\n

What is your occupation? \u00a0<\/em>I work as a salesperson at \u00c1sbj\u00f6rn \u00d3lafsson, as a substitute and then I work as a golfinstructor – I will start my studies at\u00a0 Nicholls State University this spring.<\/p>\n

What are you majoring in?<\/em> For starters I will have to take alot of introductory courses, but then the plan is to do something I\u00b4m interested in and what I think is fun, business marketing, but the bigger plan is to become a better golfer.<\/p>\n

What do you prefer parkland courses or linkses?<\/em> Parkland courses – because they are usually narrower and softer and there is usual nicer weather on them – It is fun playing where the wind doesn\u00b4t blow because in Iceland there is a wind blowing all year round.<\/p>\n

What do you prefer match play or stroke play?<\/em> It\u00b4s incredible fun to participate in a match play competition – but, oh well I don\u00b4t know, there is just something about the strokeplay that you can win 2 strokes on one whole or lose and not only to be competing about winning one particular hole at the time – I personally think\u00a0 that its more trying to play stroke play – but the match play is more trying on the mental part.<\/p>\n

What\u00b4s your favorite golfcourse in Iceland?<\/em> Korp\u00falfssta\u00f0ir (one of the 3 golfcourses at Icelands biggest Golf Club, the Golf Club of Reykjav\u00edk (GR) ) It\u00b4s a very challenging course, you\u00b4re in trouble if your not hitting the fairways.<\/p>\n

What is your favorite golfcourse anywhere in the world except for Iceland?<\/em> My favorite is Augusta, but I haven\u00b4t played that course. Of the courses I\u00b4ve played on my favorite is TPC Sawgrass.<\/p>\n

What is the most special golfcourse you have played golf on and why?<\/em> TPC Sawgrass, just knowing that all those stars used the lockers I used, ate in the same restaurant that I ate at and were in the same practice area as I went to, made it special for me.\u00a0 And then the \u201efeel good factor\u201d was high. And no. 4 is one of my favorite golfholes on the course.<\/p>\n

What is your handicap?<\/em> 1.<\/p>\n

What is your lowest score and on what golfcourse did you achieve it?<\/em> -3 under par at the Golf Club of \u00d6ndver\u00f0arnes, i.e. 67 strokes,\u00a0 a 69 on Urri\u00f0av\u00f6llur at Golf Club Oddur and a -2 under par on the golfcourse in Germany where the Harder Junior Masters took place. I have had a few rounds og -1, -2 and -3 under par.<\/p>\n

What is your longest drive?<\/em> I don\u00b4t know – but it\u00b4s shorter then Axel B\u00f3asson\u00b4s drive (Axel had just won \u201eSleggjan\u201d the Icelandic Longest Drive Competition in 2011).<\/p>\n

What do you consider to be your greatest achievement in golf today?<\/em> Becoming Club Champion at GR, 2011.<\/p>\n

Have you gotten a hole in one?<\/em> Yes at the 12th on Leirdalsv\u00f6llur (GKG\u00b4s golfcourse in Iceland). I was the first to have a hole in one there when the course opened in 2008.<\/p>\n

What snack do you have in the bag?<\/em> I have sandwiches my mom makes – I usually have a healthy energy drink – Leppin – a protein bar – well I have to be more organized in this regard maybe take a few bananas, also.<\/p>\n

Have you taken part in other sports?<\/em> I was for a long time in a club Fj\u00f6lnir where I played soccer.<\/p>\n

What is your favorite food, your favorite drink, your favorite music, your favorite movie and your favorite book?<\/em>\u00a0 My favorite food is lobster<\/strong>, my favorite drink is Leppin<\/strong>, I choose my songs on my Ipod<\/strong>, which I listen to<\/strong>; my favorite movie is Shawshank Redemtion<\/strong> and my favorite book is the one by the Icelandic National Coach in Golf \u00dalfar J\u00f3nsson and another well known Iceland golf instructor Armar M\u00e1r, \u201eBetra Golf\u201d<\/strong>\u00a0 (English: Better Golf).<\/p>\n

What is your favorite golfer name 1 female and 1 male?<\/em> Female: Natalie Gulbis along with all Icelandic Women Golfers. Male: Tiger Woods, Alex Noren, Robert Rock.<\/p>\n

Are you naming those you would like to play your dreamround of golf with?<\/em> No, in my dreamround would be, me, Tiger, Teddy Sheringham and Tom Cruise.<\/p>\n

What is your favorite club?<\/em> My sandwedge.<\/p>\n

Have you been to a golfinstructor?<\/em> Yes, there have been quite a few, Derrick Moore, \u00d3lafur M\u00e1r Sigur\u00f0sson, Arnar M\u00e1r \u00d3lafsson and Brynjar Eldon Geirs to name a few.<\/p>\n

Are you superstitious?<\/em> No.<\/p>\n

What is your maingoal in golf and in life?<\/em> In golf it is to get on the Europeantour and in life to take one step at a time.<\/p>\n

What do you like the best about golf? What a quiet and comfortable game this is – one is striking the ball outdoors in the green an one can hear the birds tweet. What could be nicer?<\/p>\n

What\u00b4s in the bag? Lots of Titleist clubs.<\/p>\n

How high a percentage do you think the mental part is of your game when your competeing?<\/em> That part has do be way up there in order to score well – in my case it\u00b4s a high numer – the mental part has to be like a 4. (On a scale 0-4 where 4 is the highest score).<\/p>\n

At last: Do you have some good piece of advice you can give golfers?<\/em>\u00a0 Be punctual – pay attention to when you\u00b4re teetime is, don\u00b4t be late.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
